Life-limiting genetic disorder that decreases the ability to repair DNA damage caused by ultraviolet light. Symptoms include severe sunburn after only a few minutes sun exposure and changes in skin pigmentation. Nervous system problems such as hearing loss, loss of intellectual function and seizures may also occur. Complications include a high risk of skin cancer. There is no cure but symptoms can be avoided or controlled by complete avoidance of exposure to sunlight.
