PSORIASISA chronic, non-infectious, inflammatory disease of the skin with spontaneous remissions and exacerbations; can have psychological effects. Characteristic lesions are inflamed, itchy erythematous plaques, which are palpable raised areas a few millimetres to several centimetres in diameter topped by greyish-white scales. Psoriasis can affect any part of the skin but often involves the scalp and extensor aspects of elbows and knees. It is important to recognise the impact of psoriasis on patients’ physical, psychological and social wellbeing as the disease can contribute to low self-esteem, anxiety, embarrassment and depression.
