Breast health & disease

Ask most women what they know about breast disease and their thoughts will often go straight to breast cancer. With 1 in 8 women now being diagnosed with the condition in the UK this is perhaps not surprising. However, many more women will suffer from other breast conditions, including benign lumps and cysts, breast pain and galactorrhoea.

This resource, consisting of five assessment questions at advanced level, tests your knowledge of these issues. The level of these questions reflects the fact that they are aimed at people working in an extended role. Complete the resource, including the further reading and some or all of the suggested activities, to obtain a certificate for one hour of continuing professional development to include in your annual portfolio.

Aims and objectives

On completion of this resource, you should have an understanding of:

  • The importance of offering appropriate advice to women who are concerned about breast cancer
  • The role of mammography in detecting breast cancer
  • Evidence based interventions for mastalgia
  • The significance of galactorrhoea
  • The role of the general practice nurse (GPN) in breast cancer care
