Dealing with patients with specific needs

Going to the doctor or nurse is not easy for many people. Not only are there the normal concerns about what the symptoms might mean and embarrassment when discussing personal matters, but there can be additional difficulties linked to disabilities and personal circumstances.

This resource, which is based on some typical case scenarios, is offered at intermediate level and includes five assessment questions to support your continuing professional development. Complete the resource, including the further reading and some or all of the suggested activities, to obtain a certificate for one hour of continuing professional development to include in your annual portfolio.

After completing this module you will

• Understand the ubiquity and importance of hearing and speech problems in primary care
• Be able to explain some methods of improving communication in the waiting room and the consultation
• Have some insight into health issues for people with learning disabilities and how general practice can support their health
• Know of a variety of ways to offer health information to people with literacy problems
• Be aware of the impact of mood disorders on long term conditions, and strategies that can help
