Nursing numbers grow

Latest figures show a rise of 1.1% in the total nursing workforce, by 7,909 to 724,516, the Nursing & Midwifery Council has announced.

Virtually all of the growth has come from nurses and midwives joining the register from the UK. Overseas growth was substantially lower than in recent years, primarily due to restrictions on travel because of the pandemic.

At the end of September there were 12,756 former nurses, midwives and overseas professionals registered on the NMC’s COVID-19 temporary register, following an appeal for retired nurses to come forward to help out during the pandemic.
