The role of fruit juice as part of a balanced diet

There continues to be a great deal of confusion among patients and healthcare professionals about whether 100% fruit juice has a place in a healthy diet. Some authorities have argued that naturally occurring fructose in fruit juice is contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. However, this hypothesis is not supported by current research.

This module, comprising a video presented by GP and broadcaster Dr Sarah Jarvis and Professor Johan de Rycker, aims to present the facts and science supporting the health benefits associated with drinking fruit juice in recommended volumes, as part of a healthy diet.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

On completion of this module, you will have a better understanding of:

  • The so-called 'fructose hypothesis'
  • National recommendations on correct portion size for fruit juice
  • Nutritional benefits of fruit juice
  • Advice you can offer to patients on moderating overall sugar consumption

This module, at basic level, is supported by the British Fruit Juice Association. The Fruit Juice Matters initiative is intended to communicate the facts and science associated with drinking fruit juice in line with nationally recommended portion sizes. Watch the video (approximately 15 minutes) then answer the multiple choice self-assessment questions to obtain a certificate of completion, which you can add to your revalidation portfolio. You should keep a record of the time spent on this activity.
